Traditional Design Tips
Millwork. Millwork. Millwork.
If you are building a new home, budget for millwork and then add in some more. It will make the home feel entirely different. It will give it a level up and not feel boring or “builder grade.” Millwork is costly but oh so worth it! It changes the entire home. Taller baseboard and bigger casing is a good start if you can’t afford crown molding or wainscoting.
Mixing finishes
Don’t buy the set from the furniture store for your bedroom or living room. That always feel like a big box store and flat. Mix the finishes but still have them be cohesive. Different shades of brown but the undertones being similar. Buy old vintage pieces to give the home some life and character. Don’t overthink it.
Wallpaper
Adding in wallpaper is always a good idea. It adds another layer in the home, helps it feel cozy and can add so much texture. This is also a great spot to add some patterns or colors. A great floral, grasscloth or a classic stripe are my favorites.
